John Gilbert - Off-roading

“Paul, your friendly laid-back style of coaching brought the best out of our group riders, whose experience ranged from off-road novices to seasoned enduro racers.  Excellent bikes (KTM 250’s), an endless supply of burgers, hot dogs and drinks at lunch time and a great choice of venue in Rogershill Raceway with its brilliant enduro and MX circuits, all made for a fantastic days riding.”

Many thanks mate, best regards, Jon Gilbert.

The experience that the team provides is top class, whether you’re a novice looking to ride lanes for the first time or an experienced greenlaner, Paul and the team will cater for your specific needs. The equipment supplied is always first class, as are the bikes.  I thoroughly recommend the Excess Energy experience as an exciting adrenaline fuelled challenge which provides for a fantastic (if tiring) day out!”

When Paul trained me originally, some 13 years ago, he equipped me with the expertise and knowledge that enabled be to ride my bike without incident for the next 4 years - come rain or shine, I was always on that bike.  Sadly, children and family started taking priority which meant an 8 year self imposed break from motorcycling.

In more recent months, and with Summer approaching, I decided now was the time to return to two wheels on the road - but this time it would be more for leisure than for everyday transport.

Recognising that my skills would likely be a bit rusty, and in the name of self-preservation, I got in touch with Paul again (he even remembered my name), to have a day's refresher course with him, on a one to one basis.

On arriving at Paul's house, I was greeted back warmly, like an old friend.  We had a cup of tea, and a preparatory chat about the principles of safe riding and what he expected from me (no stunt riding to start with!).  Within a hour, we were out on the road to Weymouth down some lovely twisty roads.  The sun was shining, and I suddenly realised why I had an urge to get back into motorcycling.  What a buzz!

Things were a little strange for the first few hours (on the great new Yamaha XJ 600's that Paul recently bought), but with careful and friendly guidance from Paul, it all came flooding back, and by the end of the day, I was able to both (i) ride with confidence on the open roads and (ii) perform slow speed maneouvers which I was really worried about doing.

I cannot recommend Paul and the team highly enough.  They are absolutely fantastic; and nice with it!  Give them a try - you will not be disappointed!

‘’I can thoroughly recommend Excess Energy for your corporate team building event. The ingredients: fast motorbikes, rugged terrain and personal challenges bring people together with a common bond. The courses are well run with the right balance of instruction, safety briefings and coaching, to keep your confidence climbing all day. The laughter is infectious and the only thing missing at the end of the day is any … Excess Energy. ‘’

When I was nine, I would watch a bunch of kids dirt biking round a field track every Sunday, wishing it was me. I did this for the few months we lived in my grandmother's house, then we moved and I forgot all about biking.

That was until one Sunday, thirty years later when I was invited to sit on a friend's bike and I thought, “...this feels like home”.  I now do well over 20,000 miles a year on two wheels, have passed my IAM test, and I am training as an IAM Observer.  I do a big solo tour at least once a year, and only use my car about once or twice a month!

Initially, I looked on the idea of doing some off road riding as an extension of my skills for road riding. At the recommendation of a friend, and I booked myself in for my first ever day off road with Paul at Excess Energy.  The first half hour of my first ever day in the mud was all rather amusing.  My heart was in my mouth as I first set off, the bike sliding around on a defrosting muddy field.  Of course I performed a couple of perfect pirouettes as I discovered how little grip there actually was on that field, the first of quite a few tumbles in fact as I then took to the learner's motocross circuit, or tried to wheelie over logs – all part of the confidence-building experience!

Once Paul had given some instruction on the main points of how to ride off road – cornering, weight positioning, use of power, and so on – the rest of the day was spent riding different parts of the 400 acre farm Paul uses.  I had no idea it was going to be quite as physical, as exhilarating, or as much fun!  At the end of the day I was exhausted.  The following day I was fit for nothing, aching all over, but grinning like a fool!! I was hooked!!

Since then, I have been back!  This time green laning, taking in legal bridleways and tracks through Dorset and Wiltshire, passing stunning views, learning new techniques, discovering new parts of two counties I know very well by road, stopping off for a pub lunch, enjoying more great views, tackling very deep and very wet challenges... . Immensely good fun!

And has it helped my road riding?  Absolutely!  My heart no longer leaps at little shimmies sideways on wet surfaces, or the front wheel jumping about on loose stones, and an increased awareness of the benefit of smooth riding to maximise control and stability on the road has come as a direct result of just two days with Paul.

Here's to day three, day four, day...
