Our CBT course is arranged so that you progress through a series of five elements.

You will only move on to the next element when our instructor is confident that you have learnt and understood the theory you need and have shown the practical skills necessary to ride a motorcycle to a safe basic level.

The five elements are:
  • Introduction - Ensures you are aware what the CBT is for.  At the end of this element you should understand the purpose and content of CBT.
  • Practical on-site training introduces you to the motorcycle. You won’t start riding the motorcycle in this element, but you’ll get hands-on training.
  • Practical on-site riding is where you'll begin riding a motorcycle. By the time you have finished this element you'll have developed enough basic skills to allow you to ride a motorcycle under control.
  • Practical on-road training covers the information you need to ride legally and safely on the road - it will be the foundations on which you build your motorcycling career.
  • Practical on-road riding is the final element of the CBT course. You'll ride out on the road with a certified trainer, and possibly with one other trainee, for at least two hours. You'll be in radio contact with the trainer who will sign a certificate of completion (DL196) when they are happy you are safe to continue learning alone.

Your CBT certificates last for two years - if you don't pass the full motorcycle test in this time, you will need to take another CBT course.

Full Motorcycle Licence - £130/day

To pass the practical motorcycle test you need to pass its two separate modules within two years of passing your motorcycle theory test. Module one will test you doing set manoeuvres on the motorcycle in a safe off-road area. Module two is the on-road test.

Watch a series of videos about the motorcycle practical test here.

About Module One

You must provide all of the following valid documents:
  • Your driving licence with the correct provisional entitlement - both the photocard and counterpart document or a valid UK passport to support a paper licence
  • Your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) certificate (DL196)
  • Your motorcycle theory test certificate
You are free from having to give CBT and theory test certificates if you:
  • Hold a full moped licence gained by passing a moped test or accelerated access after 1 December 1990, and wish to upgrade to a full motorcycle licence
  • Already hold a full motorcycle licence and wish to upgrade it
Module one includes the following specified manoeuvres and generally takes around 20 minutes to complete:
  • Wheeling the machine and using the stand
  • Doing a slalom and figure of eight
  • Cornering, hazard avoidance and controlled stop
  • U-turn
  • A slow ride
  • The emergency stop
There is a minimum speed requirement of 50 kilometres per hour (approximately 32 miles per hour) for the hazard avoidance and emergency stop exercises.

At the end of module one, the examiner will give you the result and feedback. If you passed, you’ll receive your module one pass certificate.

About Module Two

For module two you must produce your module one pass certificate, and all the documents that you had to present at the module one test. Module two is the on-road module and typically takes around 40 minutes.

This module includes the:
  • Eyesight test
  • Safety and balance questions
  • Road riding element that will cover a variety of road and traffic conditions
  • Independent riding
You’ll be asked to carry out:
  • Normal stops
  • An angle start (pulling out from behind a parked vehicle)
  • A hill start (where possible)
The examiner will normally follow you on a motorcycle, using a radio to give you directions.

You can download a list of all the safety and balance questions you could be asked by the examiner.

At the end of module two, the examiner will give you the result and feedback. If you pass, the examiner will explain to you how to change your provisional licence into a full licence.

Whether you have recently acquired your bike licence, or are returning back after a break, you will benefit from specialised tutoring from the team.  Whatever your level of experience in riding, we can increase your knowledge so that your riding techniques improve, and you are made a safer and more competent rider, with more control of your machine.
